Reflections on MLK Day

Today was Martin Luther King Day. Over the last two days I have had the opportunity to participate in some events to celebrate Dr. King. Here are some reflections from my experiences.
Yesterday I participated in the 25th Martin Luther King March held in Carlisle. The marchers assembled at a church located a block from the town square. The march then proceeded to the old courthouse located at the square. Once at the courthouse a ceremony was held inside. There were several speakers including the newly elected mayor, who also happens to be the first black mayor. As I sat in the back I looked at the crowed and thought about how Dr. King's dream was being realized. The crowd was a mix of races, gender, and ages.
Today we had school because it was a snow make-up day. I had the students at my school collect hygiene supplies for a local homeless shelter. We then made hygiene packets for the residents. During an assembly today I stressed to the students that a way to honor Dr. King was to serve others. Dr. King stated that anyone can be great, because anyone can serve. In Mark 10 Jesus also said that whoever desires to become great among you must become a servant.
So on this day as we honor Dr. King let us not forget that even though we have made great strides towards his dream, until everyone is truly equal the dream is not fulfilled. Let us also look for ways to serve others.
